Beijing Institute of Technology visited Beijing Baxy on Saturday and came away with a 2-1 victory, allowing them to advance to the third round and take on Dalian Aerbin.
Even though the Chinese Super League is on break for two weeks, there was still Chinese football action to enjoy over the weekend as second round CFA Cup matches were played across the country. The most tasty of all the clashes was right here in Beijing, with BIT taking on Beijing Baxy in a heated hometown derby.
BIT struck first very early on, foreign striker MatÃas Alonso headed a cross off the back of his teammate and past the keeper to give the visitors the lead in the 8th minute. With the surprise early lead, the “students” of BIT sat back and focused on defense, only pressing one or two men forward on the counterattack and losing the posession battle 71%-29%.
Yet it was BIT that would get on the board again, this time a long strike from defender Wang Chao hit a teammate and was redirected into the net. Baxy, struggling in the league this year, now needed to find a way to break down the tight defense of BIT and get themselves back into the match. They kept pushing forward, but BIT’s defense focused tactics were enough to push back.
Late in the second half, with Baxy continued controlling the pace of play, they finally broke through and found a goal in the 80th minute. A cross from the left found Taiwanese midfielder Chen Haowei on the back post. It wasn’t a well delivered shot, but it somehow snuck in past the keeper. The goal made things interesting during the final minutes, but it wouldn’t be enough, as BIT heads on to the next round to face Dalian Aerbin, while Baxy’s struggles continue.
There was little in the way of surprises in the second round, but two third division teams beat China League sides, with last year’s relegated Guizhou Zhicheng visiting Wuhan Zobon and winning 6-5 as well as Tianjin Songjiang losing at home to Dongguan Nancheng.
