Fans flock to greet Conca at Guangzhou airport

Guangzhou Evergrande’s  $10 million signing Darío Conca was given a heroes welcome by around 100 fans at the city’s Baiyun Airport yesterday afternoon, as the player finally arrived in China following his record-breaking transfer last week.

Sina Sports reported that  the 2010 Brazilian league player of the year was greeted by club officials and fans after his flight from Brazil to Guangzhou, via Qatar, touched down. The report says Conca himself was stunned to see such a rapturous welcome, and the news video above shows the Argentinean play maker wearing a beaming smile and wreath of flowers around his neck as he makes his way through the throng at the arrival lounge, stopping to sign autographs.

Curiously, according to a Sina Sports report, fans prepared welcome signs in Chinese and Portuguese – although Conca played with Brazilian club Fluminese, he is in fact from Spanish-speaking Argentina.

“I never imagined so many fans would turn out to meet me,” the report quotes Conca as saying,  “this never happened to me in Argentina or Brazil – I must produce my best performances in return for this welcome from these Chinese fans.”

Conca could make his debut at home to Nanchang Thursday night.
