Columbian midfielder Giovanni Moreno’s move to Dubai has broken down and he will continue to play for Shanghai Shenhua for the foreseeable future, according to the player’s official twitter.
were first to break the news via our Twitter account – our post coming some 25 minutes before Moreno himself made the announcement.
The player had recently announced he had agreed a move to an un-named club in the middle eastern state and had played his last game for Shenhua – indeed he missed Shenhua’s last three games in anticipation of the move, leading many to believe the deal was completed, including the supporters:
However, due to “last-minute problems” according to the player, he will remain at Shenhua for the time being. understands that Shenhua and the Dubai club disagreed over the size of the transfer fee to be paid. Moreno joined Shenhua for a fee believed to be around 9 million USD from Argentine side Racing Club, in July 2012.
The Chinese media had earlier speculated that Moreno had “done a Drogba” and declared his contract null and void due to continuous non-payment of wages. However, whatever the reasons behind this move, he remains a Shenhua player and is expected to play in Saturday’s derby against Shanghai Shenxin.
And so the soap opera continues.
You wouldn’t think it would be a disappointment for fans of a club with a shortage of central midfielders to learn that their (former) Colombian international playmaker would be returning to the side, but… Gio has been so underwhelming or frustrating for 90% of his time in Shanghai that I’m not particularly enthuses by this news.
