Anyone following the first round of the Chinese Super League over the past weekend was immediately in for some surprises. Friday night saw perennial relegation-avoiders Qingdao taking away all three points from Guizhou – despite the Guiyang side starting out strong and taking the lead in the first half through a stunning strike by newly signed playmaker Misimovic, who shot from outside the box to score his first CSL goal.
The other Chinese ACL teams were also in action on Friday night, Guangzhou and Beijing started their campaigns with convincing home victories against two Shanghai based teams, Shenxin and newly promoted Shanghai East Asia respectively, while Jiangsu did just enough to edge 2-1 past Wuhan Zall, the other newly promoted team.
Saturday afternoon saw prospective title contenders Dalian Aerbin slump to a 1-0 defeat at Shandong Luneng. Liaoning managed to score four goals away to take all points from Guangzhou R&F who in turn seem to continue 2013 where they left off during the closing stages of 2012. The evening fixture saw anxious Shanghai Shenhua and Tianjin Teda kick-off their campaigns to battle and puff away for a 0-0 draw in the only home match Shanghai was hosting this weekend – meaning that both teams left the pitch with a – 5 points total to linger at the very bottom of the CSL for the time being.
Last but not least, Hangzhou Greentown drew 1-1 with Changchun Yatai in the only fixture on Sunday. A total of 175,064 spectators passed through the gates at the eight CSL home grounds past weekend. This made for an average gate of 21,883. What do you make of the first day of action in the CSL 2013? Join the discussions on wildeastfootball.org.
