Well-known for their use of Shanghainese dialect in some of their songs, we’ve included audio clips to keep you right – those who frequent Hongkou’s infamous north terrace now have no excuse for not joining in.
Please note we’ve had to be creative with some of the pinyin here to represent the sounds of Shanghaihua which does not follow the standard pronunciation of the Chinese characters used to write these songs down, since there’s no right or wrong or exact method to make these understandable to non-native Shanghainese speakers.
