In the standout fixture of the first round proper of the 2013/2014 HKFA FA Cup, holders Kitchee will begin their defence of the trophy against Hong Kong FC , on February 11.
The HKFA FA Cup is similar in format to the English FA cup in the sense that there are preliminary rounds and then final rounds where the more established teams join in. The thirty seven matches of the preliminary rounds which included the second, third, and fourth divisions, have already taken place.
Metro Gallery Sun Source (Third Division), Kwai Tsing (Second Division), HKFC (Second Division) and Wofoo Tai Po (Second Division) have successfully qualified as the top four teams entering into the final rounds. The aforementioned qualifiers will now join the twelve first division teams and will play a total of fifteen matches against each other for the championship. The matches will be played in the Mong Kok stadium and Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground while the final will be held at Hong Kong Stadium on May 18th, 2014.
The HKFA FA Cup can be regarded as the most historic cup competition in Hong Kong, having been held on 39 occasions since 1974. Big boys South China Athletic Association team have been the most successful with ten wins in total. Seiko have six won times while Instant-Dict, Sun Hei and Eastern A.A have each won three times respectively.
