Former Beijing Guoan and Shanghai Shenhua forward Joel Griffiths is to return to China with Qingdao Jonoon, Wild East Football can reveal.
Australian media reported earlier this week that the 33-year-old would be leaving Sydney FC to head back to China but did not reveal which club. correspondent Peter Davis tweeted that Joel would be continuing his career in China with Qingdao FC, for what is said to be a two-year deal.
Griffiths spent three season with Beijing Guoan from 2009 to 2011 before joining Nicolas Anelka at Shanghai Shenhua. He scored 27 goals in 76 appearances for Beijing, before his controversial move south. His spell at Shenhua was blighted by injuries, appearing in 18 of 30 CSL games and scoring six goals.
Qingdao currently have a spare slot on their roster for a 5th foreign player so Griffiths’ arrival means the Shandong province club does not have to sell to accommodate their new arrival.
